This was such a great brooch to wear, light and beautifully finished. It worked well on jackets and ..
I know it’s a piece of wood from the wood pile – but it has lovely textural characteristics – somewhere between a piece of fence and a piano leg.
I didn’t get many comments on it as I think it just has a “rightness” about it that doesn’t draw comments. It sits there in a non-spectacular way but adds to what-ever it is beign worn on.

artist statement:
Certain routines can send me on a path of exploration.
The preparing of a fire set me off this time. Discovering amongst the kindling, were what seemed to be scraps of building material. I have never worked with wood much, so I salvaged some and did pretty much everything to them except for what they were intended for – burning.
Yet another piece of rubbish turned into something wearable and prolonged it’s life.
Oh! The places it will go!
21 July –
I liked this brooch immediately. Bright, light, interesting without being too challenging to the point where one can feel one is bearing a message that outweighs the decorative aspect.
Shows up well on a black jacket – look forward to trying it with other garments and seeing how it goes.
Next day – I look more closely.. it looks great with the ‘corner; directly toward the viewer. The silver coloured backing gleaming down one upper edge echoed by the two studs on the other aspect. However when worn, the thick side not cloaked by silver shows off ___ — to the wood where it attaches to the silver backing.
This seems intentional as it’s yellow paint inside the ‘nicks’ but it feel less ‘finished’ than the other two yellow sides – Those that appear more intended to be viewed. But maybe I’m not reading this as intended? And is that an issue anyway?
This brooch is best worn one was only – with silver-coloured backing gleaming away above rather than below the bulk of the brooch.
It’s an enjoyable piece to wear… light; no drag on clothes and this colour is great with many/most garments particularly purple/black/grey – deep dark tones. It’s fun to wear and more than anything for me reminded me of an architectural element perhaps. It’s best worn one way, despite apparent flexibility. Sometimes a tad of a hassle making the very light weight s/s pin to click into place.

This brooch was made for me- autumn are my colours and my starsign is LEO – so “playing with fire” feels very comfortable. Mucky yellow suits me well!!!
This is light and practical. I don’t have to be conscious of it is interchangeable and can be worn any way – horizontally, vertically or angled. It makes me feel happy – “a fire dancing on m lapel.” I have worn it socially to work (I work with the public in retail). I have worn it weekly with a group of women who I interact with – and have asked them to write their comments.
- Very functional – great with brown scarf but also good horizontally as a brooch. Dangerous clasp.
- Liked the stark look of yellow against black. Preferred this to the brooch getting a bit lost amongst the folds of the scarf.
- Thought it looked like a lizard with two heads. Nice proportion liked the wooden construction.
- Reminded me of a piece of a puzzle from a child’s jigsaw! Could be fun to fit the pieces together. Should there be more creations. Looks great on black.
- Bright focus and fun on chemise black background. Also felt it looks like lizard with two heads – interesting.
So thank you Tatjana for creating the brooch which I have very much enjoyed wearing for one month of its life –
Exciting to think where it will end up!

Perhaps it is because I am a guy and like old wooden things and worn paint; this brooch pulled me in immediately, like a lot of contemporary jewellery, the work is abstract and reminiscent of a fragment of something that once had a use value. To me this ‘something’ could be a dislocated leg or arm or a dolls house chair.
A strange thing happened after affixing it to my favourite jacket. On the first day I wore it a number of people commented to me positively about the brooch; however on subsequent days it was as if the brooch had become part of my ‘furniture’ and seemed as it invisible. I received no further comments. Is this unusual?
