For me this brooch harked back to unbundled curiosity and imagination of childhood… don’t play with matches….
The piece as a pleasure to wear. I had great fun with my work colleagues free associating –
- This plump cute structure
- A thatched roof cottage
- A book shelf with books starting to tumble out.
- A ginger bread house
- Noah’s ark
- Moon skirt
- Mouse trap
Very successful piece, inciting enjoyment and loosening up of thought, interaction and conversation,
Thanks

artist statement:
This brooch uses model making matchsticks to reference larger structures. It is constructed in a naïve method and left unpainted in a way that is influenced by the inevitable decay and regeneration of contemporary urban spaces.
Water resistant but not water proof maybe! (Although I have put another of my brooches through the wash)

I wore this to dinner at Ellas – it was admired as an elegant construction and had its share of mousetrap quips.

A quite delight to wear. Surprisingly resilient, although I have to confess to breaking the original gold finding. I think it moved too much within the structure of the piece & the point wasn’t sharp enough. Since it was replaced with the stainless steel finding have had no problems. Thanks Kate for remedying this – apologies again.
Didn’t get any comments from those around me but it was out of action for a week or two.
If Jewellery is small scale sculpture & this piece is closely related to architecture then I thik it would suit a site overlooking the crater. Not a lot of feedback to report. Sorry

A humble and small thing which felt ironically to me as if it was referencing either a monolithic abstraction or a work of architecture. I don’t wear jewellery aside from this project (and my one piece of greenstone) but nevertheless got a strange kick out of Kate’s work feeling as if it might be projecting one of my personality facets. I self-consciously imagine wearing it only occasionally and because I don’t profess any knowledge of architecture, would feel like I was making a slightly vacuous pseudo-architectural statement. Perhaps that is the point?
